Frequently Asked Questions

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that uses a powerful laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) to remove unwanted hair. During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth.

Does laser hair removal work forever?

While laser hair removal doesn't get rid of hair forever (only electrolysis is FDA-approved for permanent hair removal), it does drastically reduce hair growth—to the point that you can stop shaving altogether. ... It also gets progressively less painful as treatments continue and the hair becomes finer, says Charles.

How long does hair laser removal last?

Two years After you're finished receiving all of your sessions, then laser hair removal will last for at least two years; however, maintenance sessions may be needed to keep the area without hair forever.

What happens if you don't shave before laser hair removal?

If you forget to shave, you may want perform the procedure at another time. If the hair is above the skin, above the follicle, the risk of burn to your skin is raised. ... Between pain and a possibly pungent smell, it is not worth it to skip out on shaving before your laser hair removal appointment.

Can I shave in between laser treatments?

Unlike waxing, tweezing, threading, bleaching and epilating, it is absolutely fine to shave your hair in between your sessions, making laser a much more manageable 'self-maintenance' method of hair removal. You should shave no less than 24 hours before the day of your next treatment to avoid irritation on the skin.

Laser hair removal pre-paid treatments of less than 10 treatments will expire 12 months from date of purchase. Pre-paid treatments of 10 or more treatments will expire 18 months from date of purchase.

Pre-Treatment Advice

1, The area must be cleanly shaved within 24 hours prior to the treatment. Electric razors are not recommended as the hair is typically left too long.

2, Do not tweeze, wax or pluck the area being treated between or prior to sessions. Only shave the area.

The treatment area needs to be free from makeup, lotion, deodorant and sun cream- inform the practitioner before treatment starts if you require wipes.

3, There should be no active tan or fake tan including gradual tanners in the area to be treated.

4, Use of sunbeds or prolonged exposure to sunlight or tanning injections are not allowed for at least a month prior to treatment and a minimum of SPF 30 must be used on the area between treatments. Suntans must be left to fade completely before treatment can start. Fake tans must also be fully faded before treatment can commence (usually 1 -2 weeks after application). The area cannot be treated if it has been exposed to sun within 4 weeks prior to treatment.

5, Fake tanning products cannot be used 3-4 weeks prior to treatment. Avoid waxing, plucking, hair removal creams and bleaching.

6, Wear loose fitting, comfortable and washable clothing.

7, If it is your FIRST treatment, leave about three days hair growth in the area being treated, so we can take photographs to document the success of your treatments, and to record hair density. You may shave the area being treated before your scheduled appointment time if it is your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc., treatment.

8, Topical anesthetics, such as Maxilene 5% is highly recommended prior to laser treatment for most areas being treated, and especially high hair density areas such as bikini lines.

9, We reserve the right to charge for any appointment booked but abandoned, cancelled, or changed due to active sun-tan or fake tan, or if you have a holiday planned in the sun and the area treated will be exposed to sun, unless we are given 48 hours notice.

10, A medical history is taken at the consultation, but we rely on you to inform us of any changes to this. We need to know of any medication you are taking including those bought from a chemist or herbalist.

11, Make sure that you arrive in good time for your appointment; this will allow us to pre-cool the skin if this should be required.

Homecare Advice

1, Some redness, swelling and a mild sunburn sensation should be noticed in the treatment area for up to 2 hours after treatment. This is completely normal and should settle over the next few days. Clients should not feel any significant discomfort after treatment.

2, In order to minimize skin heating and to reduce the likelihood of skin reactions, the treatment area may be cooled before, during and after the procedure. If the area still feels hot at home, you can apply a cold flannel or cool pack. Do not allow ice packs or ice into direct contact with the skin. Apply a Vitamin E Gel or Aloe Vera Gel to the treated area twice a day for 5 to 7 days after treatment, or until the “sunburned” feeling has subsided. Gently clean area twice daily.

3, Occasionally you may experience swelling or bruising and this can last anything from 1-2 days up to 1-2 weeks. If you experience swelling, it is usually worse one to two days following treatment. If it follows a treatment to a facial area, sleeping with your head raised on pillows will minimise its appearance. Ice packs will also help to reduce the swelling. If your skin is particularly sensitive and prone to histamine reactions, you may also wish to consider taking an anti-histamine medication.

4, Wash and bathe as normal but take cool showers rather than hot baths. The skin should be patted dry and not rubbed. Avoid perfumes, strong soaps, makeup and deodorants to the treatment area until the stinging and redness has subsided. Avoid hot baths and hot tubs and also working out for 24 hours after treatment. Avoid any facial irritants such as glycolic, retinoid creams, chemical peels, microdermabrasion etc., for 7 days after treatment.

5, Apply sunscreen for 6 weeks over the treated area, and throughout the course of your laser treatments. A broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sun block with a minimum SPF 30 must be applied 15 minutes prior to casual sun exposure, and prolonged sun exposure requires repeated applications every 2 hours, and also reapplied after swimming.

6, If blistering occurs contact the clinic immediately for further advice. Keep the area clean and dry and allow them to heal naturally.  Do not use any lotions or creams on open skin as this may increase the risk of infection. DO NOT pick grazes or blisters – as this may increase the chance of a scar occurring. Once the skin has healed, a high protection sunscreen should be used daily for 12 months to prevent pigmentation changes to the skin.

7, Do not pluck or wax after your treatment. Hair should appear to grow for several days post treatment as the hair is being extruded. Hair should spontaneously fall out approximately day 4-14. Shaving of the area is allowed between laser treatments as necessary. Please allow 3 days post laser treatment to begin shaving.

8, With bikini areas, panty elastic at the leg should be avoided for several days after treatment. The irritation of the elastic can lead to rash or blistering.
